The recovery in September followed weaker figures in August. Sales for the month were also 5.8% higher than the 2025 monthly average of 789,370 tonnes.

Month-on-month growth in September was recorded in all product categories. Sales of long products increased by 18.4% m/m, to 296,170 tonnes, flat steel – by 21.5% m/m (to 503,000 tonnes), other steel products – by 27.1% m/m (to 80,550 tonnes).

According to BDS, total steel inventories in September fell to 1.87 million tonnes, which is 2.8% less than in August. In annual terms, the figure increased by 1.4%.

As a reminder, German steelmakers reduced steel production by 13% y/y in September 2026, to 2.63 million tonnes. Compared to the previous month, the figure increased by 1.3%. The industry association named a sharp decline in basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steel production during the period as the main factor behind the overall decrease.
