EU steel scrap exports jump 10% during first quarter of 2016

EDGWARE (Scrap Monster): The recently released quarterly export data indicates that the EU steel scrap exports rose by over 10% during the initial three-month period of 2016. The EU region’s scrap exports to countries outside the European Union totaled 3.884 million tons, up by 10.2% over the previous year. The EU scrap exports had totaled 3.525 million tons during the corresponding quarter last year. The monthly exports averaged at 1.295 million tons during Q1 2016. The region’s estimated annual scrap export volume is likely to exceed 15.5 million tons during the current year.

March ’16 exports

The EU’s scrap exports to countries outside the EU totaled 1.582 million tons during the month of March alone. The exports surged higher by 52.1% when matched with the exports of 1.040 million tons during the same month in 2015. Month-on-month, the region’s scrap exports were up by 16.8%. The largest destination of EU scrap exports during the month was Turkey. The scrap exports to Turkey totaled 793,000 tons, accounting for more than 50% of the total exports by the region during the month. The exports to Turkey were up significantly by 51% over the previous year.

Feb ’16 exports

The steel scrap exports by the EU region to outside markets totaled 1.353 million tons during the month of February this year. The exports went higher considerably by 33.4% relative to exports during when matched with the exports of 1.040 million tons during the same month a year before. The imports were up by 42.8% over the previous month. The key importer of EU scrap during the month was Turkey. The scrap imports by Turkey totaled 742,000 tons during the month with almost 55% share of total exports by the region during the month. The steel scrap exports to Turkey were up by almost 20% year-on-year in February 2016.

Jan ’16 exports

The total exports during January this year amounted to 945,000 tons, 35.7% lower when compared to the total exports during January 2015. The scrap exports from the EU region had totaled 1.470 million tons during January last year. The export volumes were down by 22% when compared with the month before. The EU-28 region’s scrap exports had totaled 1.210 million tonnes during December 2015.

The largest export destination of EU scrap in January this year was Turkey. The exports to Turkey totaled 567,000 tons, accounting for nearly 60% of the total exports from the region. However, the scrap exports from the EU region to Turkey declined sharply by 42.9% year-on-year during the month.

India was the second largest importer of EU scrap. The total scrap exports to India increased by 28.2% to touch 107,000 tons during January 2016. Exports to India accounted for 11.4% of the total exports out of the EU region. In third place was Pakistan with total scrap imports from the EU amounting to 92,000 tons. The imports by the country accounted for just over 9.7% of the total EU exports. The scrap imports by Pakistan surged higher significantly by 80.3% over the previous year.

Exports during 2015

The yearly steel scrap exports by the EU region dropped significantly in 2015, in comparison with 2014. The total exports during the year amounted to 13.743 million tons, 18.9% lower when compared to the total exports of 16.95 million tons during 2014.

The largest importer of EU scrap during the year was Turkey. The exports to Turkey totaled 8.079 million tons, accounting for nearly 60% of the total exports from the region. India was the second largest importer of EU scrap. The total scrap exports to India dropped marginally by 5.9% to touch 1.433 million tons during 2015. In third place was Pakistan with total scrap imports from the EU amounting to 990,000 tons, constituting 7% share of total EU steel scrap exports during the year 2015.
