Crude Steel Output by CIS Countries Saw Substantial Dip

The cumulative crude steel output during the initial eight-month period of the current year totalled 64.938 Mt, which is lower by 4.5% over the previous year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests notable decline in crude steel output by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region in August this year. The regional output reported decline of 6.2% when matched with the previous year. The output totalled 7.927 million tonnes (Mt) in August 2020, when matched with the output of 8.449 Mt during the same month a year before.

The leading steel producer in the region was Russia. The Russian output totalled 5.550 Mt, accounting for approximately 70% of the total regional production. The Aug ‘20 output by the country has declined by 4.6% from 5.816 Mt in Aug ‘19. Meantime, the output by Ukraine too recorded decline by 5.7% over the year from 1.938 Mt to 1.827 Mt. Kazakhstan, the third largest regional steel producer, saw its output by 37.6% year-on-year. The monthly crude steel output by other countries in the region is as follows: Byelorussia (225,000 tonnes), Uzbekistan (75,000 tonnes) and Moldova (20,000 tonnes).

The cumulative crude steel output during the initial eight-month period of the current year totalled 64.938 Mt, which is lower by 4.5% over the previous year. The crude steel production by the region had totalled 68.033 Mt from January to August in 2019. Only Uzbekistan reported increased year-on-year output during Jan-Aug ’20.

The top steel producers in the C.I.S region in Jan-Aug ‘20 were Russia (46.604 Mt), Ukraine (13.683 Mt) and Kazakhstan (2.130 Mt).
