Further strengthening and aggressive enforcement of antidumping and countervailing duty laws are also required, AISI noted.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has outlined public policy priorities for the American steel industry.

The subsidies by various governments and the market-distorting policies have resulted in global steel overcapacity and significant jump in steel imports in the U.S. market. The Institute urged the President and the Congress to ensure effective implementation of the Section 232 remedies on steel imports. Further strengthening and aggressive enforcement of antidumping and countervailing duty laws are also required, AISI noted.

It called for productive actions towards rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, including sustained federal funding for infrastructure improvements by way of legislations. There must be policies in place to ensure that nation’s infrastructure projects use domestically produced steel and iron materials.

The AISI noted that environmental regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must be in such a way that they do not harm the international competitiveness of the domestic steel industry. In addition, workplace educational programs must be implemented to help steel industry workforce to get familiar with advanced manufacturing technologies. Also, the administration must provide necessary assistance to the industry in achieving maximum reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
